The role of the
pharmacist in the local community - by Savitri
The role of the pharmacist in the community has changed considerably
over the last 20 years. Whereas they used to confine themselves to
dispensing prescriptions for the local GPs
& maybe giving some advice on preparatory medicines, now they
offer a much wider range of services to the community drawing on
their extensive training.
Jagjit Singh is a pharmacist. I went to interview him at the
shop where he works in Hounslow. I began by asking him about
his training. (7 mins 13 secs)

I am a presenter
on Desi
Radio since six months. I enjoy working with Desi Radio. Since I
am working here I have learnt a lot: how to present, how to speak on
the radio, how to choose the song, news, weather. I enjoy presenting
my programme. Mostly people call me, sometimes they praise our
programme, sometimes they want to listen to a song of his or her own
choice. We try to play their own choice.

I am a retired
nurse. I came to this country in 1972. I have worked for 30
years as a staff nurse and two years as a ward sister in Hillingdon
Hospital in Uxbridge. Now I am doing a radio presenter
training course. I am still interested in health issues so that is
why I have interviewed a pharmacist and a spokesperson for Breast
Cancer Care.

I’m a singer/songwriter from London.
I started out by writing poetry and have had several poems published
in various anthologies. One day I developed a melody and now I only
write songs. I’ve had air play on Roots FM, Juice FM and Jazz FM,
Quebec. Check out my sounds at www.myspace.com/saraeliot
I would love to work in radio and this course is just great. It's
given me a real insight into the workings of radio.

My name is Susan
Fayyad. I joined the Pearls One course in July 2007. The
course has enabled me to learn many of the basic skills that are
used in radio broadcasting. I find it interesting and exciting as I
am able to go out and interview people about things that I find of
interest, as well as using the equipment confidently and then coming
back and editing it. I would like to continue learning and working
in community radio, as it’s a good way to get your views heard.

My name is Navdeep Grewal and I am 20 years old. I started getting involved with the media industry two years ago when I signed up to join the Fast Forward Radio Training
course at Desi Radio. I learnt a lot in the course and wanted to get more involved as I enjoyed it very much. In 2006 I joined Desi Radio as a Radio Presenter and started doing voluntary work for them. I then went on to join the BBC in 2007 as a Broadcast Assistant.
Now I am back at the training centre doing another higher-level radio training course, hoping to aim higher and gain more valuable experience for my future career.
The experience has been a dream! |
The PEARLS courses are funded by the London
Development Agency (LDA) Opportunities Fund 2007-2010
